New Funding Available for Rural Opioid Response - Apply by May 6

Continuing the work of the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP), HRSA plans to make approximately 16 awards under RCORP – Impact, which will improve access to integrated, coordinated treatment and recovery services for substance use disorder (SUD), including opioid use disorder (OUD), in rural areas.  RCORP – Impact kicks off a new rural opioid treatment and recovery initiative under the umbrella of RCORP, which will focus on establishing new comprehensive substance use disorder treatment and recovery services in rural communities.

The Notice of Funding Announcement for RCORP – Impact was released on Grants.gov this week for applications that are due on May 6. Funds may only support activities in HRSA-designated rural areas. Applicants must apply as part of a network that includes at least four entities (three entities plus the applicant organization) and at least 50 percent of these entities must be located within the target rural service area.

Each grantee will receive up to $750,000 per year for a four-year project that meets the following goals:

  • Goal 1: Service Delivery: Establish and/or expand coordinated and comprehensive SUD treatment and recovery services.

  • Goal 2: Workforce: Develop a responsive SUD workforce, which includes both peers and clinical providers with diverse scopes of practice.

  • Goal 3: Supportive Services: Establish and/or enhance coordination with supportive social services to ensure that rural individuals and families affected by SUD have the greatest opportunity possible for sustained, long-term recovery.

  • Goal 4: Sustainability: Develop innovative, multi-sectoral approaches to ensure the continued availability of services supported by RCORP – Impact in the target rural service area.

All RCORP – Impact award recipients are required to provide medication for opioid use disorder, but otherwise the program allows flexibility at the local level to meet the four goals while addressing needs that are unique to each community.  These may include, for example, purchasing a mobile health unit to provide treatment in remote areas, or supportive services such as employment training, food access, and providing housing support.

RCORP – Impact grantees may also be able to build their local workforce through one of HRSA’s loan repayment programs for the National Health Service Corps.  Clinicians who receive these payments must agree to work a minimum number of years at approved sites in underserved and rural areas
